Team building is the act of intentionally modifying the synergy of a group to achieve cohesion through bond enhancing exercises.

Team building refers to activities and exercises that help a group of people function more effectively as a team. The goal is to improve teamwork, communication, and collaboration among team members. Team-building exercises can include a variety of activities, ranging from simple bonding exercises to complex problem-solving tasks.

Team building is an ongoing process that helps a work group evolve into a cohesive unit. The team members not only share expectations for accomplishing group tasks, but trust and support one another and respect one another’s individual differences.

However, the success of team collaboration is not a guarantee and requires diligent planning and hard work. Tannenbaum and Salas (2020) suggest that there are seven “Cs” (or drivers) of teamwork, namely: capability, cooperation, coordination, communication, cognition, coaching, and conditions.

The seven “Cs” of teamwork

1. Capability: This refers to the skills, knowledge, and abilities of team members and it ensures that team members have the necessary expertise to accomplish tasks.

2. Cooperation: It involves the willingness to work together towards a common goal, thereby fostering a sense of trust, respect, and commitment among team members.

3. Coordination: This enables team members to work together seamlessly. It involves the synchronization of efforts, resources, and timelines.

4. Communication: It is the effective exchange of information, ideas, and feedback. This encourages active listening, clarity, and openness.

5. Cognition: This refers to the shared understanding and mental model of the task and goals. It ensures that team members are on the same page and working towards a common objective.

6. Coaching: This involves guidance, support, and feedback that enhances team performance. It helps team members develop new skills and improve their performance.

7. Conditions: It  refers to the environmental and organizational factors that support or hinder teamwork. It Includes factors like leadership support, resources, and a positive work culture.

What are the 4 main types of team building activities?

1. Personality Based Team Building Techniques:

    – Focus on understanding individual personalities, strengths, and weaknesses.

    – Examples: MBTI (Myers-Briggs Type Indicator), DISC (Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, Conscientiousness), HBDI (Herrmann Brain Dominance Instrument), TMS (Team Management Systems).

    – Goal: Improve communication, collaboration, and conflict resolution.

2. Activity Based Team Building Techniques:

    – Involve fun, interactive activities that promote teamwork and bonding.

    – Examples: Escape rooms, scavenger hunts, team sports, volunteer days.

    – Goal: Build trust, foster camaraderie, and enhance teamwork skills.

3. Skills Based Team Building Techniques and Programs:

    – Focus on developing specific skills, such as leadership, communication, or problem-solving.

    – Examples: Workshops, training sessions, mentorship programs.

    – Goal: Enhance team members’ skills and knowledge to improve performance.

4. Problem-Solving Based Team Building Activities and Initiatives:

    – Encourage teams to solve real-world problems or challenges.

    – Examples: Case studies, brainstorming sessions, innovation challenges.

    – Goal: Develop critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration skills.
